Dambulla Cave Temple

Buddhism is deeply spiritual for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and worldwide, especially at the Dambulla Cave Temple. It is thought that during his banishment in the first century BC, King Valagamba sought sanctuary in these caves. After taking back the throne, he turned the caves into a hallowed location of worship as a way of showing his appreciation. The temple is still visited by pilgrims and devotees today who come to pay their respects and find inner peace.

The caves themselves are outstanding examples of prehistoric building. Beautifully carved statues, elaborate frescoes, and rock-cut pillars await you as you descend into their depths. The Devaraja Lena, Maharaja Lena, Maha Alut Viharaya, Pachima Viharaya, and Devana Alut Viharaya are the names of the five caves in the temple, each of which provides a different window into Sri Lanka`s rich artistic and religious legacy.

The temple is not only a site of great spiritual significance, but it also provides amazing sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, which is atop a massive rock, you can see Sri Lanka`s rolling hills and lush greenery in all their beauty. It is important to respect the spiritual significance of the Dambulla Cave Temple when visiting. It is advisable to wear modest clothing, and shoes must be taken off in order to enter the cave temples. It may take several hours to fully explore the caves, so be ready for some walking and climbing.
