Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Bandaranayake International Airport, our English-speaking chauffeur will be ready to warmly welcome you. Our journey will then take us securely to Polonnaruwa. Our first destination is the historic archaeological site of Polonnaruwa, which served as the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to the 13th centuries. Renowned as one of the world`s best-preserved ancient cities, Polonnaruwa, situated approximately 140 kilometers from Kandy, has earned the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site status due to its wealth of historical remnants. Despite being Sri Lanka`s second ancient capital, Polonnaruwa remains a beautifully preserved city adorned with remarkable archaeological landmarks and natural splendor. Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa comprises a historic city, an adjacent `old town,` and a `new town` located about 6 kilometers away. The archaeological sites are thoughtfully laid out and relatively easy to explore, with walking and biking tours being popular choices.

Our next stop will take us to the nearby Minneria or Kaudulla National Park, both offering thrilling wildlife safaris. Minneriya National Park is particularly renowned for its annual `elephant gathering,` a mesmerizing spectacle that takes place between August and September each year. During the dry season, around 200–300 elephants congregate around the lush Minneriya reservoir, creating a stunning sight as they feed, bathe, and socialize with their herds. Just a 40-minute drive from Minneriya, Kaudulla National Park is home to a substantial population of Sri Lankan elephants, and, like Minneriya, it hosts large gatherings of these majestic creatures around water holes from August through September. The parks are also home to a variety of endemic mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, including the Sri Lankan sloth bear, albino axis deer, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Kaudulla`s rich biodiversity has led to its designation as an Important Bird Area, with around 160 bird species calling it home.

To conclude this remarkable day, you have the option to visit an Ayurvedic treatment spa center for relaxation and rejuvenation. At the Ayurvedic Spa, you can indulge in luxurious therapies that soothe your mind, body, and soul. Commencing our journey after a hearty breakfast, we are next going to sigiriya and polonnaruwa..Our first highlight of the day is the awe-inspiring Sigiriya Rock Fortress, often referred to as the `Lion Rock` and rightfully acknowledged as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This fortified garden city, nestled within the Sigiriya rock fortress, stands as an extraordinary masterpiece of ancient urban planning, landscape design, architectural ingenuity, advanced construction techniques, exceptional hydraulic engineering, and artistic finesse. The unique harmony between nature and human imagination, demonstrated by these living examples, underscores the well-planned existence of this city and palace in the 5th century AD. Sigiriya Rock Castle is celebrated as one of the best-preserved ancient urban sites from the 1st millennium in Asia, essentially a living museum.

Embarking on our journey from Sigiriya to Kandy after a delightful breakfast is a perfect start to the day. During this journey, you`ll have the chance to explore the remarkable Dambulla Cave Temple, a site of great historical and cultural significance. Dambulla Temple consists of five caverns, each serving as a shrine room adorned with a rich collection of Buddha statues and depictions of significant figures from Buddhist history. These caverns house an impressive ensemble of 150 Buddha images, complemented by intricate sculptures and paintings representing various epochs in Sinhalese sculpture and art. While some speculate that the temple`s earliest paintings may date back to the 8th century AD, conclusive evidence remains elusive due to overpainting. Nevertheless, Dambulla is a true treasure trove of decorative motifs, with patterns reminiscent of those found at Sigiriya.

Our next stop takes us to the Matale Spice and Herbal Garden, situated a mere 25 kilometers from Kandy`s hill capital. These gardens stand among the finest on the island and offer you an immersive journey into the world of spices. Here, you`ll have the chance to learn about the cultivation and preparation of various spices, including nutmeg, pepper vines, clove trees, curry, cinnamon, and the rare cardamom, a relative of ginger that thrives in the shade of towering jungle trees and can only be harvested by hand. Visitors can purchase spices, explore traditional remedies and cosmetics, savor a herbal brew, and, in certain cases, indulge in the full spectrum of flavors offered by Sri Lankan spices during a delectable lunch or even opt for an Ayurveda massage, drawing on natural garden products.

The day`s experiences culminate with a visit to a Kandy cultural dance performance and the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Malaigawa), a distinguished UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kandyan cultural show will leave you in awe with its incredible dance performances, acrobatics, vibrant costumes, and captivating music. This cultural display, held in Kandy town, showcases several styles of Kandyan dancing that have not only remained indigenous to the area but have also spread to other parts of the island. The Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, serves as a Buddhist temple that houses the sacred relic of Lord Buddha`s tooth. It is nestled within the royal palace complex of the ancient Kingdom of Kandy, a city that once stood as the last great capital of Sri Lanka`s ancient rulers. The presence of this temple is one of the key reasons why Kandy has earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our day concludes with a comfortable overnight stay in Kandy, ensuring you have a peaceful and well-deserved rest.

Our journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya begins after a satisfying breakfast, promising a day filled with captivating sights and experiences. As we travel, our first stop is at the Royal Botanical Garden, a renowned landmark that stands as Sri Lanka`s oldest formal gardens. Each year, this botanical wonder attracts nearly 2 million visitors, both local and foreign, to the enchanting Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya. The garden boasts a rich collection of approximately 4,000 plant species, including orchids, spices, medicinal herbs, and stately palm trees. It`s especially celebrated for its impressive orchid collection and the picturesque pathways framed by majestic palm trees.

Our journey continues as we make our way to the Ceylon Tea Museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of Sri Lankan tea. The museum features informative displays on early Sri Lankan tea pioneers, including luminaries like James Taylor, the Scottish tea farmer who introduced tea cultivation to Ceylon, and Thomas Lipton, another visionary Scotsman who played a pivotal role in producing Ceylon tea and exporting it to Western markets, commencing in 1890. The museum spans four floors, showcasing antique tea-processing equipment such as 19th-century generators, rollers, dryers, fermentation tables, and sorting machines, predominantly on the ground and second floors. The first floor houses a library and an auditorium with captivating audio and video presentations, while the third floor offers a delightful tea shop.

Concluding our day`s journey, we embark on a Nuwara Eliya city tour to savor more of the region`s scenic beauty. The city exploration commences with a visit to the historic Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, one of Asia`s oldest golf clubs, viewed from the outside, followed by a tour of the charming town. Upon arrival in town, you`ll have the chance to admire one of Sri Lanka`s oldest post offices, an elegant Tudor-style colonial structure with a striking red brick façade. Our next stop is at Victoria Park, a delightful park named in honor of Queen Victoria`s memorial. Take a leisurely stroll around the park and soak in the tranquil ambiance while marveling at the beautiful trees and lush grass. Our journey proceeds to Lake Gregory, a picturesque man-made reservoir with a colonial heritage. Initially designed for hydroelectricity, it now serves as a recreational and relaxation destination, surrounded by breathtaking vistas of distant mountains.

Our day concludes with a restful overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya, offering the perfect opportunity to recharge for the adventures that await.

We begin our day`s adventure right after a satisfying breakfast at the hotel. During our journey, you`ll have the opportunity to witness the picturesque beauty of a tea plantation and gain a glimpse into the world of tea production at a local tea factory. One highlight of this visit is the chance to savor Sri Lanka`s renowned No. 01 tea cup, freshly brewed at the Tea Factory. Sri Lanka boasts a rich history of tea tourism, and practically every tea factory offers guided tours. These tours can seamlessly fit into your travel itinerary through the tea country and are relatively time-efficient. Typically, a visit to a tea factory begins with an exploration of the tea plantation, providing insights into the art of tea cultivation. Afterward, you`ll be led to the factory to observe the vintage equipment used in the tea industry, where tea leaves were traditionally withered, rolled, and dried prior to the industrial revolution. Following the informative tour, there`s usually an opportunity for a tea tasting, where you can savor various specialties produced by that particular factory.

Continuing our journey, we`ll be enchanted by the sight of the mesmerizing Ramboda waterfall. Notably, Ramboda features not just one, but two separate stair-like waterfalls, cascading gracefully. Moreover, on the opposite side of the main road at Ramboda Place, another lesser-known waterfall awaits exploration. While many tourists tend to focus on the well-known waterfall, the lesser-visited counterpart is equally worth experiencing. In nature, rivers often create tributaries and waterfalls when they traverse rocky terrains or descend from mountainous landscapes. As water courses down cliffs and rocks, it can sometimes divide into two branches of the same river, forming twin waterfalls in close proximity. It`s a relatively rare occurrence for these tributaries to reunite after forming the distinctive Y-shaped cascades.

As our journey nears its conclusion, the final day`s farewells can be likened to the last brushstrokes on a masterpiece, adding depth and meaning to the canvas of your remarkable travel experience
